There are several types of vegan diets, each with its own set of guidelines and restrictions. Individuals may choose a vegan diet for ethical, environmental, religious or health reasons. Here are a few common types of vegan diets:
Thai Vegan
Traditional Thai vegan and veganism (or “Kin Jay”) refers to food that does not contain animal products. The term “เจ” (translated as “Jay” or “Je”) in front of a restaurant or on food packaging, usually in red-yellow colors like the logo of this website, means that it is “vegan”. Note: Traditional Thai vegan also excludes garlic and onions from the diet.
The Vegan History of Thailand
Thailand has a long history of veganism and vegetarianism rooted in its cultural and religious practices. The majority of Thais follow Theravada Buddhism, which encourages its adherents to refrain from harming living beings. As a result, many Thai Buddhists practice vegetarianism, especially during religious festivals and observances.
One of the most important periods for vegetarianism in Thailand is during the annual Nine Emperor Gods Festival, known locally as the “Vegetarian Festival”, “Tesagan Kin Jay (Je)”, or simply “Jay Festival”. This nine-day event typically takes place in the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. During this time, participants follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet to purify the body and mind.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of vegetarianism and veganism in Thailand, reflecting global trends. This shift is influenced not only by traditional beliefs, but also by health and environmental concerns. Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand have seen an increase in vegetarian and vegan restaurants catering to locals and tourists who choose a plant-based diet.
While vegetarianism has deep roots in Thai culture, veganism is a relatively new concept. Veganism, which excludes all animal products, has gained traction worldwide, and Thailand is no exception. Many Thai people are becoming more aware of the ethical, environmental and health aspects of their food choices, contributing to the rise of veganism in the country.
